New River Gorge Now National Park

by | Jan 20, 2021 | News

Long known as a National River, the New River Gorge in West Virginia was recently designated a national park and preserve.
The reclassification, included in late December’s federal stimulus relief package, makes New River Gorge the 63rd national park in the United States as well as the 20th named preserve. The area includes about 6,000 acres of the nearby 73,000 acres of federal land.

According to U.S. Senators Shelly Capito and Joe Manchin and U.S. Rep. Carol Miller, the change could boost tourism in the area. Outdoor recreation is a $9 billion industry in the state, said Capito, and redesignation to national park status could boost visitation by 21 percent.
